In the years following the pandemic, the economy has presented challenges to workers across the nation. From the 

, individuals are no doubt feeling financial pressure. This reality is becoming increasingly hard to ignore, with everyday expenses steadily climbing and the value of hard-earned wages struggling to keep pace.

Our survey revealed that 76% of savers are stressed about their financial situation. 

Whether it’s struggling to pay rent, making student loan payments on time, or keeping up with the increasing cost of essentials, employees across the board find themselves facing economic strain.

79% of survey respondents reported that inflation has impacted their ability to save. 

Employees are finding themselves in a position where saving is a challenge—be it for a down payment on a first home, building up their emergency savings, or setting aside money for retirement.

Employees Are Prioritizing Retirement Savings Despite Economic Challenges

In spite of these challenges, workers are still prioritizing their retirement savings. In fact, they wish they could be saving more.

 The results of our survey reveal a clear gap between savers’ current deferral rates and their perceived ideal savings rates. Among Vestwell 401(k) and 403(b) account holders, the average deferral rate in 2023 was 6.4%. 

While 62% of savers believe they should defer 10% or more of their salary to retire comfortably, only 34% of savers actually contribute to that degree.

This discrepancy points to a broader issue: contributing to retirement savings, among other living expenses, continues to be a challenge for many. 

40% of respondents reported their biggest concern when it comes to saving for retirement is that they cannot afford to save enough.

 A higher salary and employer match were identified as key motivators for respondents to increase their retirement savings.

Vestwell's 401(k) and 403(b) saver data provide deeper insight into retirement saving trends across generations. The average annual contribution amount for each generation on our platform has shown resilience despite economic challenges, with figures staying within $2,000 of the levels in recent years.

There are key opportunities and advantages for businesses—such as improved employee performance, increased recruiting and retention capabilities, and the potential for certain tax advantages—when they expand their benefits package to include a retirement plan.

Many employees say that their financial stress has hindered their overall health and ability to work. In fact, among employees who report they are stressed about their finances, over 48% say it has impacted their mental health, 33% note their sleep has suffered, and 11% indicate their work performance has been adversely affected. By offering a retirement plan, employers can not only illustrate a commitment to their employees but also, in the long run, have workers who may be more focused at work.

In addition to reducing stress and improving employee well-being, company-sponsored retirement plans are a powerful recruiting and retention tool.

How Does New York State Secure Choice Savings Work?

New York State Secure Choice Savings is a government-sponsored savings program created to help employees working in New York build savings for retirement. 

New York business owners who meet certain criteria will be required by law to offer a qualified, employer-sponsored retirement plan or enroll their employees in the program.

New York employees will make contributions to the program through automatic deductions from their paycheck into a Roth individual savings account (Roth IRA) unless they choose to opt out. 

The money in the account will grow tax-free, and employees won't have to pay income tax on any money they withdraw from their account during retirement.

The program is overseen by the New York Secure Choice Savings Board but administered by private sector partners. The program is currently under development, with no set launch date.

$5,000 x .10 = $500 (pre-tax 401(k) contribution)

$5,000 - $500 = $4,500 (remaining income pre-tax)

$4,500 x .22 = $990 (tax owed)

Not only is Pat able to contribute $500 pre-tax to her 401(k) account, but the deferrals she makes also lower her taxable income for the year.

What Is a Roth Contribution?

Roth contributions are contributions made from your income after federal, state, and local taxes have already been withheld. Because of this, you don’t receive tax advantages for the year you contribute, like you do a pre-tax contribution.

Let’s look at an example using the same facts as we did above with the Roth contribution:

Pat’s monthly taxable income is $5,000. Assume that Pat’s tax rate is 22%. Also, assume that Pat would like to contribute 10% of her after-tax income to her Roth 401(k) account.

This would be the result:

$5,000 x .22 = $1,100 (tax owed)

$5,000 x .10 = $500 (Roth 401(k) contribution)

$5,000 - $1,100 - $500 = $3,400 (income after taxes and contribution)

Although these examples are basic, you can still see the tax differences at the time of contribution. Notice that the tax owed on the Roth example is $1,100 while the tax owed in the pre-tax example is $990—a $110 difference.

The Roth tax benefit comes during retirement when you withdraw from your Roth 401(k) account. Because you already paid taxes on this money at the contribution stage, you can make withdrawals from your Roth 401(k) account tax-free, including any earnings you’ve received as your retirement accounts have grown. In other words, your earnings grow tax-free, no matter how significant they may be.

Additionally, because you’ve already paid taxes on your Roth contributions, you can withdraw them at any time as long as you meet the following requirements:

You are 59½ or older; and

You have held the Roth account for at least five years.

The exception to this rule is if you become permanently disabled or pass away. In that case, you or your beneficiary can access your Roth 401(k) account without penalties or taxes.

However, you may have an “early” withdrawal if you take Roth contributions out before you turn 59½ or have held the Roth account for at least five years. In this case, you may have to pay a 10% penalty on some or all of the amount you withdraw in addition to regular federal and state income taxes.

When determining which is better for you, you can’t stop the analysis here, especially since the Roth’s tax favorability doesn’t kick in until you take a distribution of your retirement funds. Which contribution type to use (or a combination of both) is an individual decision based on your current financial situation and retirement goals. Working with a financial advisor can help you determine the ideal course of action for you and your family.

Pre-Tax vs. Roth 401(k) Contributions

*This maximum limit is an aggregate limit. In other words, you can split your contributions across Roth contributions and pre-tax contributions. However, the total amount of your employee contributions cannot exceed these maximum amounts.

Conclusion

Each type of 401(k) contribution has its pros and cons. We recommend consulting with your financial advisor or tax expert when navigating the choice between pre-tax 401(k) or Roth contributions. However, staying in the know on your 401(k) plan will help you maximize your financial returns, minimize your taxes, and create a sound plan for your future. No matter which option you select, starting early and saving consistently for retirement should be your primary goal.
